How to apply for a China tourist visa

Complete the online form
Fill in the official China visa application form online — the COVA system or the visa-centre portal that serves your country — and gather your documents.
Prepare your documents
Passport, photo, and — for most applicants — confirmed round-trip flight and hotel bookings plus a day-by-day travel plan. Some countries also ask for bank statements.
Submit in person & give biometrics
Book an appointment and submit at the visa application centre, where fingerprints are usually taken. In Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana there is no fully-online route.
Collect your visa
Standard processing is typically around four working days once your file is complete; then collect your passport with the L visa.
How long your visa lasts and how long you can stay are different
This trips up almost every first-time visitor. Validity is the window in which you may enter China — you must enter before the “Enter Before” date. Duration of stay is how many days you may remain per entry, counted from the day after you arrive — for tourists that's commonly 30 days. They're independent: a visa valid for several months might still allow only a 30-day stay each visit. And once the validity date passes, the visa is finished — even if you didn't use all your entries.
What African travellers should plan for
African travellers face the strictest path of all — none of these markets is visa-free, and the rules differ by country. We plan around them for you.
Tour + agency invitation
Nigerian tourists generally can't apply as individuals — the rule is to travel as an organised group with an invitation from an authorised travel agency in China. We can be that organiser.
More than the basics
Expect to show confirmed flights and hotels, a travel plan, and (in Kenya and Ghana) bank statements — sometimes more. We tell you exactly what your centre expects.
Group visa-free to Hainan
If your trip is to Hainan, organised tour groups can enter visa-free through the island's cruise and group routes — a legitimate option a Hainan-based team can arrange.
