The Chinese Government Scholarship — usually called the CSC, after the China Scholarship Council that administers it — is the main government-funded route to study in China. Depending on the scholarship and year, it can be fully or partially funded, covering tuition and often accommodation, a living stipend and medical insurance. There are two common ways in: the Bilateral Programme, applied for through your home country's authorities, and the Chinese University Programme, applied for directly through a university. Either way you still need admission to a Ministry of Education-recognised university, and you apply on the official CSC online system within an annual window (commonly early in the year for a September intake). Terms, coverage and deadlines change yearly, so accuracy and timing matter. This guide explains how to apply — and where you'd rather a China-based team build the application with you, that's what HCSG does.
The basics

What to know before you apply

Three things shape your CSC application.

What it covers

Varies — full or partial

Many CSC awards cover tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly stipend and basic medical insurance — but coverage differs by scholarship type and year, so check the current terms.

Two ways to apply

Bilateral or university

Apply through your home country's authorities (Bilateral Programme) or directly via a Chinese university (Chinese University Programme). We help you choose the stronger route.

You still need admission

To a recognised university

A scholarship doesn't replace admission — you apply to a Ministry of Education-recognised university and for funding in the same cycle.

Your options

CSC and other scholarship routes

More than one scholarship may fit — many students apply for several in parallel.

How to apply for the CSC scholarship

The order that builds a strong application — HCSG can guide each step.

1

Shortlist universities & programmes

Pick recognised universities and programmes that match your field and accept CSC applicants for your level.

2

Check eligibility & deadlines

Confirm the current eligibility, coverage and the annual deadline for your target intake — these change each year.

3

Prepare your documents

Assemble transcripts, a study plan or research proposal, recommendation letters, language evidence and authenticated certificates.

4

Apply on the CSC system and to the university

Submit on the official CSC online application system and complete the university's own application in the same cycle.

5

Accept & move to the visa

On a successful award you receive your Admission Notice and admission form — then apply for the student (X) visa.

Deadlines and terms change every year — start early

CSC coverage, eligibility and deadlines are set annually, and the window often closes months before the September intake. Late or thin applications lose out to early, well-prepared ones. Don't rely on last year's dates or a forum post — confirm the current cycle and give yourself time to gather authenticated documents. We track the calendar and keep your application on schedule.

A stronger application, built with you

CSC is competitive, and most rejections come down to weak study plans, late submissions, or missing/unauthenticated documents. A China-based team that knows what universities look for changes the odds. HCSG helps you choose the right programmes and route, sharpen your study plan, assemble and authenticate your documents, and submit on time on the official system. We never charge for the scholarship itself — we help you win it and handle the visa that follows.

Questions founders ask us

Specific, net-new answers — not a repeat of the guide above.

What is the CSC scholarship?+
It's the Chinese Government Scholarship, administered by the China Scholarship Council, the main government-funded route to study in China. Depending on type and year it can fully or partially fund tuition, accommodation, a stipend and insurance.
Does the CSC cover everything?+
Often much of it — commonly tuition, on-campus accommodation, a monthly stipend and basic medical insurance — but coverage varies by scholarship type and year. We confirm the current terms for the award you target.
How do I apply for the CSC?+
Through one of two routes: your home country's authorities (Bilateral Programme) or directly via a Chinese university (Chinese University Programme), on the official CSC online system — alongside the university's own application. We help you pick the stronger route.
Do I still need university admission?+
Yes — a scholarship doesn't replace admission. You apply to a Ministry of Education-recognised university and for the scholarship in the same cycle, and the award is tied to your admission.
When is the CSC deadline?+
It's set annually and often closes months before the September intake. Dates shift each year, so confirm the current cycle rather than relying on old information — we track it and keep you on schedule.
Do I need to speak Chinese for the CSC?+
Not always — many CSC-eligible programmes are taught in English, while Chinese-taught ones expect an HSK level. We help you choose a programme that matches your language profile.
What documents do I need?+
Typically transcripts, a study plan or research proposal, recommendation letters, language evidence and authenticated certificates — with the exact set depending on the university and your country. We give you the precise list.
Can I apply for more than one scholarship?+
Often yes — many students pursue CSC alongside university and provincial scholarships to improve their odds. We help you run parallel applications without conflicts.
Can HCSG help me win a CSC scholarship?+
We can't guarantee an award — no one can — but we help you build a competitive, on-time application: the right programmes, a strong study plan, authenticated documents, and correct submission, then the visa if you succeed.
