not visa-free for every country
A China tourist visa — officially the L visa — is what you need to visit China for sightseeing or a holiday, if your country isn't on China's visa-free list. And that list matters: China is now visa-free for many nationalities, but travellers from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and most of Africa still need a visa — they're excluded from the unilateral visa-free, the 240-hour transit and the Hainan schemes alike. The L visa is for tourism only — not business (that's the M visa) or work (the Z visa). To get one you apply at the Chinese visa centre that serves your country, with your passport, a photo, and — for most applicants — confirmed flight and hotel bookings and a travel plan. The catch most people miss is the gap between how long the visa is valid and how long you can actually stay. This guide walks the whole process — and where you'd rather the trip and paperwork were handled for you, that's what HCSG does.
The essentials

What the L visa is — and who needs one

Three things to be clear on before you plan.

Tourism only

Sightseeing & visits

The L visa covers holidays and sightseeing. Business is the M visa, working is the Z visa, and visiting close relatives can need a different visa — we confirm which fits your trip.

Apply before you fly

At a China visa centre

If you're not visa-free, you apply in advance at the Chinese visa application centre or consulate that serves your country.

Not visa-free? You're not alone

NG/KE/GH need a visa

China is visa-free for many countries, but not for Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana — the tourist visa is your route, and we make it simple.

The big question first

Is China visa-free for you?

Last verified June 2026 — visa-free rules change often, so confirm your status before you travel.

How to apply for a China tourist visa

A clear sequence — HCSG keeps the bookings, documents and timing aligned so nothing slips.

1

Complete the online form

Fill in the official China visa application form online — the COVA system or the visa-centre portal that serves your country — and gather your documents.

2

Prepare your documents

Passport, photo, and — for most applicants — confirmed round-trip flight and hotel bookings plus a day-by-day travel plan. Some countries also ask for bank statements.

3

Submit in person & give biometrics

Book an appointment and submit at the visa application centre, where fingerprints are usually taken. In Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana there is no fully-online route.

4

Collect your visa

Standard processing is typically around four working days once your file is complete; then collect your passport with the L visa.

How long your visa lasts and how long you can stay are different

This trips up almost every first-time visitor. Validity is the window in which you may enter China — you must enter before the “Enter Before” date. Duration of stay is how many days you may remain per entry, counted from the day after you arrive — for tourists that's commonly 30 days. They're independent: a visa valid for several months might still allow only a 30-day stay each visit. And once the validity date passes, the visa is finished — even if you didn't use all your entries.

Coming from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or beyond?

What African travellers should plan for

African travellers face the strictest path of all — none of these markets is visa-free, and the rules differ by country. We plan around them for you.

Nigeria: a group route

Tour + agency invitation

Nigerian tourists generally can't apply as individuals — the rule is to travel as an organised group with an invitation from an authorised travel agency in China. We can be that organiser.

Show your bookings & funds

More than the basics

Expect to show confirmed flights and hotels, a travel plan, and (in Kenya and Ghana) bank statements — sometimes more. We tell you exactly what your centre expects.

A Hainan shortcut worth knowing

Group visa-free to Hainan

If your trip is to Hainan, organised tour groups can enter visa-free through the island's cruise and group routes — a legitimate option a Hainan-based team can arrange.

What you actually pay a specialist for

For most travellers there's no secret “free letter” here — if you're applying independently, confirmed flight and hotel bookings stand in for an invitation. The real value is done-for-you: a confirmed, genuine itinerary and bookings that satisfy the visa (not throwaway dummy reservations), the paperwork handled, and — for Nigerian travellers — the authorised-agency group invitation you're required to have. With HCSG that itinerary is an actual five-star trip, not a placeholder. No one can “guarantee” a visa — approval is the consulate's decision.

Questions founders ask us

Specific, net-new answers — not a repeat of the guide above.

Do I need a visa to visit China?+
It depends on your nationality. China is visa-free for many countries, but travellers from many others — including Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana — still need a tourist (L) visa in advance. We'll confirm your status before you plan.
Is China visa-free for my country?+
Visa-free lists change often and don't cover everyone; several large markets remain visa-required. Because the rules shift, check your current status rather than relying on an old list — we keep ours up to date.
Do I need an invitation letter for a China tourist visa?+
Independent tourists usually don't — confirmed flight and hotel bookings stand in for an invitation. Organised group tours from certain countries do need one. Visiting close relatives can require a different visa altogether — we confirm which applies and arrange it where required.
How long can I stay in China on a tourist visa?+
It's set by the duration of stay on your visa — commonly 30 days per entry, though it varies by nationality. That's separate from how long the visa is valid for entry, which is a common source of confusion.
Do I need flight and hotel bookings to apply?+
For most applicants, yes — confirmed round-trip flights, accommodation for your stay, and a travel plan. We provide a real, confirmed itinerary so you're not paying for bookings you'll never use.
How much money do I need to show?+
Some consulates ask for evidence you can fund your trip, such as recent bank statements; the specifics vary by country and change. We give you the current requirement for your situation rather than a generic figure.
How long does a China tourist visa take?+
Standard processing is typically around four working days once your documents are submitted, though it varies by centre. Apply several weeks ahead to be safe — we build the timing into your trip plan.
What's the difference between a tourist, business and work visa?+
A tourist (L) visa is for sightseeing and visits; a business (M) visa is for trade and meetings; a work (Z) visa is for employment. If you're unsure which you need, our China business-visa guide explains the difference.
Can HCSG arrange my visa and my whole trip?+
Yes. We handle the tourist-visa paperwork and build the trip around it — hotels, transport, guides, tickets and transfers — and, where it applies, the group invitation or Hainan visa-free registration. Tell us where you'd like to go.
